Sociological Methodology 2019 (volume 49) is dedicated to the eminent sociologist Stanley Lieberson, who passed away in 2018. For more than 50 years, Stan’s research and writing advanced the discipline’s substantive understanding of race and ethnic relations, culture (both language diversity and processes of cultural change), urban sociology, and social organization. Shaped by his demographic training, Stan’s research style involved probing, rigorous, and imaginatively constructed analyses of multiple databases about the subject under study. In parallel, Stan made important contributions to social science methodology throughout his academic life. His mid- and late-career works—beginning with Making It Count (MIC; 1985)—dealt with methodology in a broad sense: They examined the logic and reasoning that underlie research procedures and their implications for the conclusions reached. After a brief recounting of Stan’s life, career, and major substantive works, this essay surveys his methodologically oriented scholarship.
