ABSTRACT

This article widens the discourse surrounding depictions of violent women in Quattrocento Italian literature by analysing the gendering of women’s violence in Gregorio Correr’s Neo-Latin tragedy Procne (c. 1429). In adapting Ovid’s tale of Procne, Philomela, and Tereus, Correr defects from coeval alignments of women’s physical violence with masculinity and, by extension, virtue. Drawing on the Senecan Medea, Virgilian Amata, Dionysian bacchantes, and persecuting Furies, Correr enhances models of male violence with female-inspired escalations that rebel against submissive wifehood and maternity. These perversions engage with the expanded latitude afforded to Quattrocento noblewomen, whose augmenting socio-political capital, education, and courtly agency were becoming increasingly incompatible with tropes of the submissive consort. In gendering his protagonist’s violence as a feminine perversion – and, importantly, an amplification – of male models, Correr posits a novel conception of transgressive female violence that draws equally on models of deviant classical women as contemporary anxieties about gender and patriarchy.
