In this article, a cognitive, metonymic approach will be applied to the well-known phenomenon that events denoted by non-derived denominal verbs do not necessarily involve a referent of the base noun (e.g. Sue hammered the nail into the wall with her shoe). In particular, it will be argued that shared sensorimotor experience as to the interaction with basic-level objects like hammers, shelves, or bicycles facilitates the interpretation of the respective verbs even in the absence of a referent. Concepts related to the agent either provide mental access to habitual activities (to nurse at St. Mary's) or establish metaphorical readings on the basis of perceived similarity (e.g. to Sherlock Holmes, to sea-lion).
