A compilation of essays published previously by a leading scholar of empirical theology of pentecostals-charismatics, this book is a cohesive call for theologians who specialize in things theoretical to make us of social-scientific research and statistical studies. Because the chapters are taken from the breadth of Cartledge’s career to date, they sketch the trajectory of his own development in the form of his research projects. They also demonstrate well his own skills with both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Such an intersection has implications for theological method in general. The combination of the two is especially important for the study of pentecostalism, due to the prevalence of popular theology in that tradition. Every church tradition has a degree of disjunction between its official teachings and the beliefs and practices of some of its members. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in pentecostalism because of the non-confessional status of theology in most pentecostal churches. It is all the more important, then, to find out how grassroots pentecostals understand the basic tenets of Christian faith. Cartledge charts a way to provide more accurate descriptions of what lay pentecostals themselves truly believe, both as an end in itself and as fuel for ongoing formal reflection by pentecostal and other theologians.
