The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) is one of the oldest and arguably one of the most successful archaeological societies in the American Southwest. AAHS was founded in 1916 by Dean Byron Cummings, principally to enable support for the Arizona State Museum (ASM) as well as for Dr. Cummings’s archaeological research projects. Over the ensuing decades, it has grown into a multi-faceted organization serving both professional and avocational archaeologists. While continuing its affiliation with ASM, the society now provides a variety of research grants totaling over $14,000 a year to scholars from across the country. AAHS sponsors a vigorous lecture and field trip program as well as educational opportunities for elementary school students. In keeping with the theme of preserving the history of its past, AAHS is actively interviewing and filming prominent southwestern scholars and making these interviews available on its website and through its YouTube channel. Since 2018, AAHS has sponsored a Traditional Technologies Program that offers travel support for Native American and Hispanic artists and scholars and non-Native students and scholars who practice or study southwestern traditional arts and technologies. The society’s quarterly journal, Kiva: Journal of Southwestern Anthropology and History, publishes original research and is an internationally recognized professional journal. Kiva has been the flagship publication of AAHS since 1935. AAHS also accepts the gifts of books and libraries from which the ASM Library selects volumes that will enhance its holdings before the remainder is offered at AAHS-sponsored book sales, which further support ASM’s Library and Archives. [End Page 570]

On April 18, 2016, to start the AAHS’s 100th anniversary year, Dr. Raymond H. Thompson presented a lecture entitled “Arch and His Ancestors,” laying the groundwork for its year of review. Continuing with this theme, it seemed appropriate to further record the early history of the AAHS for its present and future members. Having seen David Wilcox a number of times in the Arizona State Museum poring over the AAHS archives and knowing his keen interest in the history of southwestern archaeology, he seemed the ideal person to provide this information. Hence, the idea of a series of articles in the society’s newsletter Glyphs arose, and David kindly agreed to write them.

As background research for his articles, David compiled multiple data files in his general study of antiquarianism in Arizona, with special attention to the history of the Arizona Antiquarian Association, the Hohokam Museums Association, and AAHS. These data files include tables of membership lists and endnotes with biographical sketches for these organizations. To view these data files as well as Dr. Thompson’s lecture and the original Wilcox Glyphs articles, please navigate to History of the Arizona Archaeological & Historical Society under the “Roots of SW Archaeology” menu on its website, https://www.az-arch-and-hist.org.

The collection of Dr. Wilcox’s Glyphs articles reproduced here will further enable the dissemination and preservation of this history for the future. We are grateful to Journal of the Southwest and to David Wilcox for this contribution to its legacy. [End Page 571]

When Katherine Cerino of the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) in early 2016 asked me to help celebrate their centennial that year by writing a couple of brief essays for their newsletter Glyphs, I was happy to agree. Throughout my professional career I have greatly enjoyed the interactions I have repeatedly had with many volunteers whom I like to refer to as “avocational archaeologists”—because many of them embrace the values of professional archaeology as anthropology. Indeed, at its founding in 1935, the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) stressed the importance of amateur/avocational persons with archaeological interests becoming members of the society, making its relationships with “citizen archaeologists” central to both its successes and its public support (Griffin 1985; Don Fowler, personal communication). And from my time as an apprentice archaeologist...

Kiva: Journal of Southwestern Anthropology and History,发表原创研究,是国际公认的专业期刊。
