Seeking with Henry Crawford to enter the park at Sotherton, Maria Bertram tells the man with whom she will later commit adultery: ‘unluckily that iron gate, that ha-ha, give me a feeling of restraint and hardship. I cannot get out, as the starling said’.11 Maria is quoting Sterne’s Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy.22 John Wiltshire, a recent editor of Mansfield Park, discusses the abruptness of Maria’s reference: One effect of its eruption is to require or force the reader to supply a context that the context of the novel itself seems to assume…. The bird’s cry (as disconcerting in Sterne’s text as Maria’s here) reminds him that however one makes up one’s mind to endure imprisonment, its suffering is intolerable…. The effect is to make her speech sound not like the outburst of a selfish and petulant woman, but like the cry of all women caught in what might be defined as patriarchal society, but might equally well here be called her fate.33
