Elliot Stern

This issue begins with a transcribed speech given by Hans Bruyninckx Executive Director of the European Environment Agency (EEA) to the European Evaluation Society’s online conference held in October 2021. We have published many articles now on the challenges for evaluators as a result of the environmental, sustainability and climate-related crises humanity faces. A call by the Executive Director of the EEA for the evaluation community to make ‘impactful contributions in times of urgency’ reinforces the strong message of this stream of articles, including the collective reflections of many leading evaluators following COP 26 published in issue 28 (1). More hopefully, Bruyninckx also highlights some of the practical actions that the European Union (EU) policymakers are planning and discussing – and even starting to implement – within the framework of the European Green Deal. The war in Ukraine gives these thoughts about the need for systemic change and for just transitions towards sustainability added urgency.
