Abstract Certain species of acorn- and nut-feeding weevils, Curculio spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), have become significant insect pests of cultivated hazelnuts (Corylus spp.) (Fagales: Betulaceae) worldwide. The significance of weevils that feed on and injure hazelnuts is increasing as countries such as the United States and China continue to develop hybrids of hazel plants to increase their hazelnut production. This review focuses on the ecology, impact, management, and identification of the four known species of hazelnut-injuring weevils throughout the world: Curculio dieckmanni (Faust), Curculio nucum L., Curculio obtusus Gibson (the hazelnut weevil), and Curculio occidentis (Casey) (the filbert weevil).
