s I write this, we are a full year into the pandemic, a health crisis that has revealed in ever starker terms the deep disparities at the heart of AmerA ican society. And—no surprise to readers of this journal—women have been hit particularly hard, as the inequities of childcare provision and housework (and women’s disproportionate representation in lower-wage “essential” work) have pushed more and more women out of the workforce and into a troubling cycle of despair. So of course we open this issue with a special commissioned symposium on Covid-19—featuring work by Cynthia Enloe, EvelynnM.Hammonds, Sari Altschuler, Priscilla Wald, Mel Y. Chen, Cynthia Patton, and Miriam Ticktin—bringing a wide range of feminist perspectives to the pandemic and its wider political parameters. This issue is notable, I think, for the way issues of representation and discourse crop up across widely differing theoretical frames and topics. In particular, I was struck by the linkage between representation, affect, and embodiment in articles as different as Diana Garvin’s fascinating history of the uses of women’s reproductive bodies in Fascist and contemporary Italian right-wing imagery and Zoe Vorsino’s investigation of the creepy ways in which sexism and racism get baked into supposedly neutral chatbots. Similarly, KristenMcHenry understands fracking not just a practice but as a gendered discourse with quite undiscursive implications for health. And Poulomi Saha’s deep dive into the technics of contraception in the context of imperialist “family planning” raises fascinating questions about the relationships between discourses of family, technologies, and global population surveillance. Even our pieces on sexual harassment and violence ask questions about how the feelings of rage and suffering impact resistance. Our Stimpson Prize winner—Sara Tafakori—focuses on Iranian feminist activism (particularly its online manifestations) and how emotions can be creatively used to create transnational feminist solidarities. Dianna Taylor joins much recent scholarship in foregrounding rage as feminist resistance to sexual humiliation, and Dianna Shandy and M. Gabriela Torres examine how professional associations do (or do not) create new and better norms around sexual assault and harassment. As usual, a wealth of offerings from Signs!
