ideologies and by academic demands; an overview of religious theatre as confessional literature in Sweden, describing its content and function in the society of the time; an examination of the development of the literacy of commoners in Finland from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, where the reading of religious texts played a crucial role; and finally a chapter on the importance of pietism for the development of the modern self in Finland, and how its ideas were spread in translations and new works in Finnish. Taken together, the authors of the volume thus manage to treat a wide number of interesting and relevant perspectives. A common denominator for all of them is that they demonstrate the flagrant transnational character of Swedish and Finnish book history and book market in the period under investigation. The wide range of angles also gives a hint on how rich the soil is where the digging has now started again. We can only hope that this book will have many successors. As in all anthologies, we meet here contributions of varying quality and scholarly depth. In addition, some of them are seemingly mostly summaries of discussions already made by the same author in other publications. Some articles, however, do break new ground with thoughts and ideas that have not been formulated before concerning Swedish book history of the period. In the articles of Otfried Czaika and Kajsa Weber, just to mention two of them, we meet discussions founded on modern theory (Assmann and Genette respectively) that help us gain new insights and open up new research areas because of new observations. Nevertheless, both are still firmly relying on traditional bibliography. Personally, I cannot but agree with and appreciate that both of them, as well as some other authors, also express and stress the demands for renewed bibliographical efforts in Sweden, in order to bridge the gap to the early twentieth century in that area.
