In Leading Learning’s new podcast series, The Surge of the Third Sector of Education, hosts Jeff Cobb and Celisa Steele describe the pertinent characteristics of the third sector, as well as its role and often overlooked status within greater education. The target audience of the podcast are educators, researchers, and practitioners outside of the traditional confines of K-12 and higher education, which comprise the third sector. This podcast is especially relevant for those who wish to gain a better understanding of the third sector, including composition, trends, and future outlooks. Organizations directly involved in the third sector, including corporate learning and development, education tech companies, and learning businesses, as well as continuing education in academia and trade/ professional associations, could benefit from the series. The podcast is a seven-episode arc (roughly 30 minutes per episode), covering trends and issues in the third sector; guests are invited on the show over the seven episodes to share their unique insights and experiences within the third sector of education. In episode 258 (#1 in the series), the hosts define the third section of education, the rapid financial investment businesses are dedicating to the sector, and the underlying reasons for this transformation. The episode is a good jumping off point for those unfamiliar with the third sector of education and underscores the need to understand its role in education, especially for learning businesses. In episode 259 (#2) guest Michelle Weise, author of Life Long Learning: Preparing for Jobs that Don’t Even Exist Yet, discusses the methods to uncover and operationalize underlying and unsurfaced skills of workers in the third sector. Of particular note, the guest discusses how businesses can reimagine how to perform longer tasks in a shorter amount of time such as on-the-job training. Episode 260 (#3) features guest Casandra Blassingame, CEO of the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), who discusses partnerships among entities in the third sector and how enhanced communication between these entities can be mutually beneficial. The podcast also discusses the role of academic and workplace credentials and its connection to business and occupational performance. In episode 261 (#4), Dr. Anthony Carnevale, director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, joins the podcast to discuss the role of training on enhanced productivity as well as how training has taken a much larger role in education. The author emphasizes the need for continuous education and training to meet the demands of an ever-changing educational sector. Episode 262 (#5) invites Nigel Paine, author of Workplace Learning: How to Build a Culture of Continuous Employee Development, to discuss the overlooked role the third sector plays in developing and transforming adults into lifelong learners, 1039442ALXXXX10.1177/10451595211039442Adult LearningAdult Learning research-article2021
