ABSTRACT

This essay examines the possible influence of the poetry of John Keats on the poetry of John Tyndall. Tyndall’s work as a Victorian physicist is introduced, along with his lesser-known canon of poetry. Several areas are evaluated, including resonances to Keats’s ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, the use of Keatsian terminology, the moon as a cipher for romantic attraction, the meaning of landscape for the creative and scientific imagination, and the pantheistic sublime. The essay concludes that clear influences of Keats can be found shimmering through John Tyndall’s poetry, with his philosophy of scientific investigation reflecting, eventually, a form of negative capability.
