This issue marks the final of our special volume commemorating the centenary of the BBC. It takes as its theme the ‘BBC in the World’, drawing on one of the institution’s five public purposes as laid out in its charter: ‘to reflect the United Kingdom, its culture and values to the world’ (BBC, 2022). From an early stage in the BBC’s development, it has understood itself in global terms: by defining itself in comparison or contrast to other national broadcasters (Hilmes, 2011); by assuming for itself an ambassadorial role via ‘cultural diplomacy’, especially among the British ‘commonwealth’ (Potter, 2012); by adopting practices of international programme trading (Moran, 2013; Steemers, 2004) and transnational co-production (Hilmes et al., 2019; Weissmann, 2012); or by creating a meaningful and highly respected global brand (Johnson, 2012; Richards, 2013). Although its raison d’etre may be to operate as a national public service broadcaster, the BBC’s reach, significance and influence extends well beyond the shores of the UK.
