Nico Baumbach’s Cinema/Politics/Philosophy presents a systematic reinterpretation and reevaluation of three contemporary European philosophers’ work on cinema: Jacques Rancière, Alain Badiou, and Giorgio Agamben. Several features separate Baumbach’s work from similar studies of these figures. First, Baumbach pairs his interpretations of each of these philosophers’ engagement with cinema with a particular “canonical” thinker in film theory – Rancière with Louis Althusser, Badiou with Gilles Deleuze, and Agamben with Walter Benjamin – in order to show how each philosopher pushes traditional debates in film theory in new directions. Second, each chapter is connected by a single, innovative, and at times challenging argument concerning the proper way to conceive the relationship between the concepts listed in its title (cinema, politics, philosophy). The book is therefore much more than an overview of these important thinkers and their engagement with cinema; it is a timely intervention into debates about what it is possible for film theory to say about the relationship between cinema and politics, and what role philosophy might play in those discussions.
