ABSTRACT

This survey study focused on understanding more about how hospitality management students view class participation in courses within the discipline, using an international sample based on 225 responses. The respondents felt that class participation is important, that if there is the expectation that they will have to participate in class that they will prepare more for the class, that it was more difficult to participate in large classes, and did not like cold calling. Some differences in perceptions were noted by students based on their home country, gender, and class format. Additionally, the more important that students believed the application of knowledge, putting forth effort, and class participation to be, the greater they perceived the importance of class engagement to be, and the higher students perceived the application of knowledge and class participation to be, the more partial they were toward class engagement.
