Controlling infectious diseases in livestock and preventing the transmission of zoonotic agents to professionals and end consumers require the use of disinfection. Disinfection is part of the procedures applied in biosecurity protocols in livestock farming, but also in veterinary medicine. Disinfectants belong to one of the four main groups of biocides according to Regulation 528/2012. Several classes of chemical compounds are used for disinfection. Their physico-chemical properties, biological activities and (eco)toxicological profiles differ and must therefore be taken into account in their implementation at farm or veterinary medicine levels. We will review these classes and discuss them in the context of One Health approaches and in the perspective of the implementation of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and One Health approaches.
