The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) is a standard setting intergovernmental organization working across borders with the mandate to improve animal health, welfare and veterinary public health.

The fight against AMR needs global and coordinated solutions. WOAH is in the most privileged position to help lead the global fight on the animal health front, implementing its strategy on AMR and prudent use of antimicrobials, based on principles from the cross-sectoral Global Action Plan on AMR. This strategy aims at (i) improving awareness and understanding, (ii) strengthening knowledge through surveillance and research, (iii) supporting good governance and capacity building, (iv) encouraging implementation of WOAH standards.

Different activities are conducted by WOAH in regard to the use and availability of antimicrobial agents.

WOAH has been monitoring the use of antimicrobial agents in animals since 2015 and, in 2022, this monitoring system has been transformed into an online customized database system with a public interface: ANIMUSE Global Database (ANImal antiMicrobial USE).

WOAH is an associate member of the International Cooperation on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Registration of Veterinary Medicinal Products (VICH), supporting his Members to become part of the VICH Outreach Forum through capacity building activities to promote harmonization. Furthermore, HealthforAnimals, in collaboration with WOAH in the frame of the public private partnership, developed a manual on “How to set up a pharmacovigilance system of veterinary medicinal products” to provide information and assist national competent authorities to set up and run a pharmacovigilance system for veterinary medicinal products at national, sub-regional and/or regional level in alignment with international standards and VICH guidelines.

WOAH also supports regional initiatives on harmonization and regulatory convergence.
