Every Congress takes an immense amount of planning and personal sacrifice of time. Firstly, I need to acknowledge the Executive of the EAVPT who have shared this responsibility with me now for five years (almost two consecutive terms) working across continents often at anti-social hours. Namely Professors Pierre-Louis Toutain, Maria-Rosa Martinez-Larranaga, Jon Mochel and Wolfgang Baumer. In addition, Professor Arturo Anadon who as well as co-chairing the Scientific Committee also volunteered to visit Lviv, Ukraine with me in 2019. Lviv was the congress location selected at the AGM of our last congress in Wroclaw, Poland. The team there led by Dr Yuriy Kosenko did a huge amount of preparation before this Congess was postponed, initially on account of Covid-19 and latterly due to the devastating conflict. Their team needs acknowledgement for their enthusiasm and the efforts which have not been fully recognized.

Professors Mathias DeVreese and Siska Croubles with relatively short preparation time offered to take the initiative to host this Congress in July 2023 in the beautiful and historic city of Bruges, Belgium and we are grateful for their hard work in making this happen.

The objective of the EAVPT is to promote interaction and knowledge in an open and accessible forum. Our Congress is the largest international congress in the discipline and is aims to include an agenda of innovative pharmacology of relevance to animals, man and the environment, including insights into state of the art therapeutics and we generally run practical workshops aligned with each Congress and in conjunction with the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology to fully engage clinicians. We value the perspective and insights of the international regulators who are always encouraged to attend and dedicate sessions to consider the challenges of regulating and harmonizing a global animal health market to ensure quality, safety and efficacy of medications to protect consumers, target animal species and the environment as well as downstream innovations or potential impact on human health. Clinicians, researchers, teachers, regulators and scientists including importantly the innovators from pharmaceutical companies are all welcomed and encouraged to interact informally at our congresses and make lasting contacts.

This is my 30th year of being a member of EAVPT, some have been members longer but many more will take leadership of our association in the future. I welcome you all and encourage you to participate fully, keep publishing and keep science alive and proactive for the future! Science is about breaking molds and presenting new paradigms, it is about challenging the status quo based on evidence and experimenting where there is insufficient evidence, it is about embracing risk and daring to imagine better things. I encourage you to take a leadership role in defining our future and that is why our congress logo is: Our Animals, Our Health and Our Environment.
