Life cycle assessment of bio-based nitrogen upcycling approaches

Nitrogen recovery from food waste is associated with a couple of main food waste treatment technologies, which concentrate on recovery of energy or return of nutrients to agriculture (soils). Such treatments, however, are connected with environmental impacts. The review analyzed recent literature aiming for the identification of green technologies of nitrogen recovery, able to deal with the range of organic waste biomass, especially highlighting the environmental impacts associated with nitrogen recovery during bioconversion (application of organisms for upcycling of nutrients). It is possible to identify that there is a range of bioconversion technologies (microalgal, microbial, and insect) capable of nitrogen recovery from food waste but their efficiency is limited due to the lack of methods assigning weights to nitrogen upcycling.
