Catalytic cracking of ammonia toward carbon-neutral liquid fuel

The prevailing challenges in H2 storage and transportation have hindered the widespread utilization of hydrogen as a carbon-neutral energy source. Ammonia is suggested as a promising liquid carrier of hydrogen, from which H2 can be released by catalytic cracking. In this Short Review, we discuss the recent efforts on the development of NH3 decomposition catalysts based on Ru, nonprecious metals, bimetallic alloys and high-entropy alloys. The focus of this discussion is on their structure-property relationships and corresponding catalytic mechanisms. After summarizing the previous work, we draw attention to further research directions in the foreground of ammonia as a carbon-neutral liquid fuel.
