Abstract:

Through the person of King Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory articulates an emotional response not experienced by one, but as a form of 'social grief,' a grief formed outside the normative bounds and emotional regime of the Arthurian community. Similar to Malory's evocation of the despair of the Arthurian court, we also grieve the loss of civil society, replaced by the shadow side of the American ideals of individual freedom and constitutional rights.
