The Effect of Thermal Stresses on the “Crazing Resistance” of Optically Transparent Polycarbonate

Abstract

In this paper, experimental data on studying the effect of thermal stresses on the “crazing resistance” of the imported Makrolon polycarbonate and domestic VTP-8/PK-EA-7.0 polycarbonate in comparison with serially applied organic polymethylmethacrylate glasses, such as SO-120 nonoriented glass and AO-120, were presented. The studies were performed by the method of studying the resistance of organic glasses to thermal shocks developed at the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” and National Research Unitary Institute “All-Russian Institute of Aviation Materials” by creating thermal stresses on the surface of a material in the course of experiment under thermal shocks with the use of a metallic indenter. The experimental data on the initial temperature of the formation of residual stresses in polycarbonate and the relaxation of stresses in polycarbonate after thermal shocks were measured.
