In this Reflection From the Field, I use an emotionally difficult interview and related public observations to unpack the place of emotion in qualitative research. I argue that emotion, both researchers' and participants', should be considered in two ways: as a research tool and as a human experience. I conclude with a call for greater attention to emotions even in research on topics that do not seem inherently emotional, and provide suggestions for doing so.
