A bibliometric analysis of fantasy sports research

Fantasy sports are a type of virtual computer game that have gone from being played by half a million people in the late 1980s to around 60 million people in 2020 in North America alone. Consequently, research exploring the topic (fantasy sports research; FSR) has also emerged. The present study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of all peer-reviewed published articles and review papers that have focused on fantasy sports. Fitting the criteria were 230 publications. Data collected from this work addressed seven research questions. Results of the analysis included (but are not limited to) the identification that FSR began in earnest in 2007 and is likely on a moderate upward trend; that gambling is the most common theme for FSR, with sports consumption and law also featuring regularly; and that a plurality of FSR is original research taking a questionnaire approach with young, male adults and exploring either fantasy sports in general, or specifically, fantasy American football. The findings have considerable implications for prospective authors in the field, but also for readers interested in the topic and journal editors and reviewers who are assessing future work.
