In summer 2022 Aalto University hosted the 27th International Workshop on Industrial Crystallization (BIWIC 2022) at an in-person event in Espoo, Finland after a two-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. BIWIC is an international workshop that brings researchers and engineers from academia and industry together to discuss the latest discoveries and challenges in industrial crystallization. The BIWIC 2022 addressed and promoted discussion on the role of industrial crystallization with a special emphasize on circular economy, such as recovery of nutrients and recovery of valuable products from industrial side-streams. Other covered topics consisted of precipitation of metal hydroxides used in batteries, membrane crystallization of proteins, crystallization of conductive polymers, kinetics of ice nucleation, modeling of internal seeding with the aim of advanced nucleation control, solvent and additive effects on crystal shapes, separation of enantiomers, and process monitoring based on ultrasound tomography. A selection of contribution is presented in this issue of Chemical Engineering & Technology.
