The chemical process industry faces a myriad of challenges that demand the rapid advancement of sophisticated and efficient process systems. In response to these challenges, the establishment of sustainable technological solutions for industry and society has become imperative. The concept of process intensification emerges as a promising avenue for addressing current challenges, aligning with the overarching goal of sustainable technological solutions. This strategy integrates innovative processes and products within the realm of chemical research and development, aiming to ensure profitability amidst growing uncertainties. It encompasses diverse aspects of chemical and process engineering, including chemical plant design, plant equipment, simulation, modelling, biotechnology, and engineering in life sciences.

This special issue commemorates the successful organization of the 6th International Conference of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Biotechnology (ICCEIB2022) on August 15–16, 2022. ICCEIB2022 was hosted by the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (Malaysia) and co-hosted with Nguyen Tat Thanh University (Vietnam) and Tianjin University (China). This special issue comprises invited articles from ICCEIB2022 participants and other experts covering chemical engineering and biotechnology topics, such as energy, catalysis, process intensification, and environmental engineering. All accepted papers in this special issue have undergone a thorough peer-review process before being accepted for publication.

The Guest Editors sincerely appreciate all the remarkable contributions from authors and insightful comments from reviewers. Moreover, the Guest Editor expressed gratitude to Dr. Barbara Böck and her editorial office team for their valuable guidance and assistance throughout the completion of this special issue. We also anticipate that this compilation will be well-received by readers, fostering progress in the fields of chemical engineering and industrial biotechnology for the betterment of both industry and society.
