Length–weight relationship and reproductive biology aspects of Sardinella melanura caught from the coastal waters of Phetchaburi, the Inner Gulf of Thailand

Abstract

This work describes the length–weight relationship (LWR) and various reproductive parameters of Sardinella melanura caught by artisanal fishers using gillnets along the coast of Phetchaburi. The LWRs were significant (p < 0.001) in female, male, and combined sexes, with corresponding LWR equations of W = 0.0077L3.0616 (r2 = 0.867), W = 0.0067L3.1055 (r2 = 0.890), and W = 0.0061L3.1473 (r2 = 0.893), respectively. Regression coefficients (b) indicated isometric growth in females and males, while in pooled samples, b showed positive allometric growth. The relative condition factors (Kn) (mean ± SE) were 1.02 ± 0.004 in females and 0.99 ± 0.004 in males, and reached a peak in September. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) reached a peak in September, and the breeding season was between August and October. The relative fecundity estimates (mean ± SE) were 2249.3 ± 80.8 eggs⋅cm–1 and 1037.7 ± 27.9 eggs⋅g–1. The relationship equations for fecundity–length and fecundity–weight were F = 2.6943 SL3.79 (r2 = 0.587) and F = 603.5 + 1012.9 W (r2 = 0.512), respectively. Examples are presented to show how the results of this study could help fishery managers develop appropriate conservation management strategies for this species in the Inner Gulf of Thailand.
