Properties of Composite Materials Based on Cardboard and Polymer Films

Abstract

The objects of research are composite materials based on cardboard and biaxially oriented polypropylene films with an adhesive coating. They are obtained by hot lamination and intended for the production of book and magazine bindings. The influence of composition and technological parameters of the manufacturing process on the properties of the composite material, such as the tensile strength, water and light resistance, and the adhesive strength, is investigated. If a glossy film is replaced with a matte one the strength of the composite material increases while its performance indicators decrease. Upon reduction in the lamination temperature from 122 to 85°C and decrease in the lamination speed from 8 to 5 m/min the tensile strength and adhesive strength of the resulting composite material tend to enhance and the performance characteristics are improved. The composite material obtained using the glossy film exhibits a higher adhesive strength.
