Exploring Thermophysical Properties of Butyl Lactate with Short-Chain 1-Alkanol Using Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives

The current paper aimed to study the properties and interactions of liquid mixtures containing butyl lactate and 1-alkanols with carbon chains ranging from 4 to 7 (1-butanol, 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, and 1-heptanol). Excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations were analyzed by experimental measurement of density and viscosity at varying temperatures and 0.1 MPa pressure. Solutions with butyl lactate and 1-butanol or 1-pentanol showed negative excess molar volumes, while mixtures with 1-hexanol and 1-heptanol had positive values. All liquid mixtures exhibited negative viscosity deviations that declined as 1-alkanol carbon chain lengthened. The PC-SAFT model successfully simulated pure fluid and mixture densities, with maximum 1-pentanol mixture deviations of 0.98 %. Overall, PC-SAFT accurately correlated both pure and solution densities.
