On the Role of Peeling–Ballooning Mode in Triggering the Type-I ELMs

The peeling–ballooning (P–B) mode has been thought to play an essential role in causing the type-I edge-localized modes (ELMs) in the H-mode plasmas, although firm experimental evidences of the P–B mode as a cause of Type-I ELMs have not been provided. In this letter, we examine the dynamical evolution of the P–B mode when the plasma parameters come across the linear stability boundary. It is noted that the P–B mode model has some limitations to explain all of the trigger of Type-I ELMs.
