Novel hydrodistillation and steam distillation methods of essential oil recovery from lavender: A comprehensive review

Lavender holds significant importance as a medicinal and aromatic plant cultivated worldwide for industrial purposes, with its essential oil being a sought-after ingredient in a wide range of products. It is cultivated for commercial uses of flowers (fresh, dried, or ground) and essential oils. The present paper provides a comprehensive overview of the various aspects of novel hydrodistillation methods of essential oils from lavender. First, it briefly addresses botanical attributes, geographical distribution, chemical composition, and uses of lavender. Then, plant material pretreatment and extraction methods are discussed. It prioritizes the advancements in ultrasound- and microwave-assisted hydrodistillation, emphasizing benefits, limitations, and synergies. Physicochemical properties are detailed, shedding light on composition and therapeutic potential. The review considers the techno-economic, environmental, social, and human health issues of lavender essential oil production, assessing sustainability. Lastly, it offers a forward-looking perspective, identifying areas for future research and technological enhancements.
