The allocation of yard spaces in container transshipment ports differs significantly from that in traditional container ports. In this study, we examined the yard space allocation problem specific to container transshipment ports with mother and feeder vessels. Following an in-depth analysis of container stacking patterns for these vessel types, we propose a yard space sharing strategy called the “sub-block with two services” approach. Subsequently, we develop a mixed-integer programming model tailored to optimize yard space allocation within container transshipment ports. The primary objective of this model is to enhance yard space utilization while concurrently minimizing container transportation distances. To improve the efficiency of the proposed model, we employed a range of optimization methods and established an effective upper bound for solution quality. Finally, we draw on our experimental findings and consider the practicality of container terminal operations to provide insightful recommendations for managing container transshipment ports with mother and feeder vessels.
