The myrtle rust fungus, , is a devastating pathogen of plants in the family . This fungus has a broad host range and is widely distributed in many countries. Surveys of rust disease in southern China detected a typical symptom of a serious shoot and leaf rust disease on trees in Guangdong Province of southern China. This study aimed to identify the causal agent of the disease and evaluate its pathogenicity on trees. Based on morphological characters and multigene phylogenies of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the nuclear large subunit (LSU) regions, the species of was identified. Pathogenicity tests conducted with urediniospores on the young leaves of trees showed symptoms of infection similar to those observed in the field. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report of on in China.
