Correlating the structural and magnetic properties of the non-cubic double perovskites with Ir5+ ions

In this paper, we have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of LaSmZnIrO and LaSmZnCuIrO double perovskites. We have used the conventional solid-state method to synthesize the samples. The room temperature crystal structures of both the samples are monoclinic with P2/n space group. It is evident from the temperature dependent Raman study of the samples that structural transitions occur with progression of temperature from monoclinic (P2/n) to tetragonal (I4/m) to cubic (Fm-3m). The presence of several oxidation states of Ir ions (Ir and Ir) in both samples was confirmed by the X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study. The behavior of the temperature dependent magnetization and isothermal magnetization confirms the antiferromagnetic (AFM) nature of the samples at low temperature. This behavior may be due to the interactions between Sm–Sm (or Sm–Ir) or due to the presence of lesser amount of Ir ions compared to Ir ions in the samples.
