A fluorescent probe for facile detection of gaseous styrene quantitatively

Styrene is a volatile and toxic compound that also has commercial value. Therefore, development of a simple and effective method for detecting styrene in air is essential. Inspired by our previous research, we developed a straightforward method for detecting styrene based on the Heck reaction. The probe detects styrene with a low detection limit (4.21 nM), rapid response (3 min), and good selectivity. In addition, styrene was detected in air by loading the probe into a test paper. Finally, a probe solution absorption method was developed to provide quantitative data of gaseous styrene. This work has the potential to be applied for detection of styrene in air, and it also provides a valuable reference for detection of other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
