Aspects of Continuous Rolling When Starting with Unreduced Strip

This study discusses the technological aspects of a nonroutine start with an unreduced strip using the example of a five-stand cold rolling mill 2000. We analyze the existing system for automatic control of strip thickness and tension when starting a mill with an unreduced strip. Such a start is shown to be the most critical process in terms of the level of disturbing influences, and with the initial structure of the system for automatic control of thickness and tension, one cannot ensure a sufficient level of trouble-free operation of electric drives of roll mill stands at low rolling speeds. We propose installing rest tension regulators (RTRs) to reduce the “dead zone” of tension regulation and loss of controllability, i.e., when opening the control loop. Additionally, it is proposed to transform the existing structure of tension regulators to influence the rate of the stands. After analyzing the statistical information obtained at the mill, we can say that upon introducing RTRs, no case of “virtual” strip breakage was recorded at the start of the process.
