A non-catalytic thermal as well as visible-light photoredox catalyzed approach towards 6-alkylsulfonylmethyl phenanthridines is demonstrated. The strategy involves the exposure of biaryl vinyl azides to the in-situ generated alkyl sulfonyl radicals, accessed from 4-alkyl substituted Hanztsch esters in the presence of an SO2 surrogate like DABSO/K2S2O5.
