Optimization of the structural, optical and electrical properties of PVA/V2O5 for shielding applications

Recently, polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) have been improved for many applications, such as shielding applications. Pure polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl alcohol/vanadium pentoxide (PVA/VO) with different weight percentages of VO have been prepared for this purpose. The structure of prepared samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated Total Reflectance - Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The optical band gap, dielectric constant and AC conductivity have been investigated. The studies revealed that the properties of PVA were improved by adding VO except for the sample exceeding 20 wt % due to agglomeration of NPs in the PVA matrix. The mass attenuation coefficient was calculated using both XCOM and Phys-X software. Other radiation protection parameters were also performed using the latest program. It was found that the sample encoded as PVA4 possesses the best shielding properties with the highest VO wt. % among other samples studied in this report. The half-value layers (HVL) values have been compared with two standard radiation shielding glasses (., RS-360 and RS-520) and found to have better shielding capacity.
