Practical applications of inorganic adsorbents for radioactive waste water treatment at NARI. Part I: Laboratory scale tests

Several varieties of radioactive waste water, such as Mo-99, laundry, process and waste ethylene glycol waste water, were stored at NARI and needed for further treatment. Radionuclides, which mainly be Cs-137, Sr-90 and Co-60, should be removed from waste water before discharge. Practical adsorption by commercial (Cs-Treat, Sr-Treat, DT-30, DT-30A, A-51 and NRW 160) and customized (ACCs and AC-Sr) inorganic adsorbents for on-site radioactive waste water treatment in the laboratory scale were investigated. Treatment equipment, procedures, consumption volumes and capacities of adsorbents are described and discussed as well. Capacities and performance of commercial and customized adsorbents for various radionuclides (Cs-137, Sr-90 and Co-60) were investigated. Two inorganic adsorbents, ACCs and AC-Sr, were developed by NARI for specific radionuclides (Cs-137 and Sr-90) adsorption. Adsorption capacities of ACCs for Cs-137, where the removal rate was more than 95 % within 10 days applied in process waste water, was equivalent with commercial adsorbents, DT-30 and DT-30A. The removal rate of Gross β, Cs-137 and Sr-90 applied by AC-Sr had maintained more than 95 % for 50 days of laundry waste water treatment.
