Seasonal abundance of Hyalomma anatolicum tick infesting cattle of coastal Odisha, India

Hyalomma anatolicum is an economically important ixodid tick infesting cattle all around the globe as it is a vector for bovine tropical theilerosis. The present study was conducted for a period of one year in coastal Odisha and the prevalence of Hyalomma ticks were found to be 23.84%. There was a higher abundance of ticks during summer (29.56%), followed by monsoon (24.74%) and winter (17.22%). Tick population were highest during the month of May when temperature, relative humidity and rainfall recorded were 26.4–38.8 °C, 64% and 114.9 mm respectively. The correlation analysis of monthly tick burden with climatic factors revealed temperature to be the most dominant factor in abundance of ticks with highly significant correlation (p < 0.01) for minimum temperature (r = 0.899) and maximum temperature (r = 0.774). A moderate and low correlation was recorded for rainfall (r = 0.418) and relative humidity(r = 0.134) respectively. The investigation underlines the importance of various climatic factors on the abundance of the tick species.
