Γ-Type Five-Level Current Source Inverter

Conventional five-level current source inverters (CSIs) face issues with current imbalances, necessitating complex balancing controls. A recent innovation introduced the X-type five-level CSI, offering inherent current balancing. However, it demands a sizable dc inductance and exhibits reduced voltage gain at higher modulation indexes. This article presents a novel Γ-type five-level CSI, requiring a significantly smaller dc inductor while achieving higher voltage gain and efficiency under large modulation indexes. Additionally, it maintains the inherent current balancing characteristic. Detailed derivations and calculations concerning inverter gain, passive components, transient voltage analysis, and efficiency are provided. The performance of this newly proposed inverter is validated through simulation and laboratory-scaled experiments.
