Pre-lithiation is an essential strategy to compensate for irreversible lithium loss and increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This review briefly outlines the internal reasons for the initial irreversible capacity loss of LIBs, emphatically summarizes and discusses various pre-lithiation techniques, together with some challenges being faced and prospects are provided, guiding significant research directions in the future.
