Triboelectricity is shown to be composed of three charging events: contact electrification, charge induction, and electrostatic discharge. The combined effect of contact electrification and charge induction improves electrical output in TENGs while electrostatic discharge is detrimental. Methods to deconvolute discharge events in triboelectric signals, generated in contact separation mode, improved reliability and efficiency.
