Polyisoprene-based pressure-sensitive adhesives with dynamic crosslinks

The reuse of multi-layered materials, which are held together by adhesives, has been identified as a major issue. In this research, we explored an external catalyst-free transesterification chemistry for thermally triggered, on-demand debondable adhesives that are prepared by reacting readily available (macromolecular) diols through a one-step process with a rubbery polyisoprene-graft-maleic anhydride matrix. The research starts with a systematic study investigating how the architecture of the diol, the flexibility of its backbone, and the presence of mildly basic compounds affected the rate and quality of network formation. The dynamic behaviour of the most promising formulations is then characterised, after which pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) specimens have been made to test the potential for on-demand debonding via temperature-controlled static shear tests. The debonding process is solely triggered by an increase in temperature (T > 100 °C), ensuring the approach is non-destructive and industrially feasible. The herein reported drop-in method thus provides a starting point for the development of a new class of rubber-based adhesives that should be able to bond as well as debond various substrates such as metals and plastics.
