During the early months of my IIG porphyry copper project in Chile, I had a revelatory moment on an evening LAN Chile flight from Arica south to Santiago (Fig. 1.8). From a window seat on the left side of the Sud Aviation Caravelle, I could see the line of Quaternary stratovolcanoes along the Chile-Bolivia border illuminated by the setting sun (Fig. 4.1).
