Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with an average size of 4.7 nm and with uniform surface functionalization of sp2 clusters were prepared by a hydrothermal method using the D. glomerata extract as precursor. The prepared CQDs exhibit antioxidant properties and can effectively reduce free radicals like superoxide O2 or oxidants like KMnO4. CQDs show also higher Cu2+ chelating activity than the starting extract or carnosine,
