At the turn of the 20th century, the Vienna University Hospital was internationally renowned for immunological research. One of the pioneers who worked there was Clemens Freiherr von Pirquet (1874–1929), who is still remembered as an innovative paediatrician, basic researcher and teacher.¹ The 150th anniversary of his anniversary seems a good time to reflect on his influence in the fields of paediatrics, immunology, bacteriology and allergology, which led to five Nobel Prize nominations.
