A Quadratic Discontinuous Finite Volume Element Scheme for Stokes Problems J. Sci. Comput. (IF 2.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-05 Yuzhi Lou, Hongxing Rui
In this paper, we construct a quadratic discontinuous finite volume scheme for Stokes equations. Specifically, the quadratic discontinuous finite volume method (DFVM) is composed of the discontinuous Galerkin method with incomplete interior penalty term and the finite volume method. By means of special mapping, we simplify the bilinear form of DFVM and establish a relationship with that of the discontinuous

On the Dynamics of the Boundary Vorticity for Incompressible Viscous Flows J. Sci. Comput. (IF 2.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-01 Vladislav Cherepanov, Jian-Guo Liu, Zhongmin Qian
The dynamical equation of the boundary vorticity has been obtained, which shows that the viscosity at a solid wall is doubled as if the fluid became more viscous at the boundary. For certain viscous flows the boundary vorticity can be determined via the dynamical equation up to bounded errors for all time, without the need of knowing the details of the main stream flows. We then validate the dynamical

A Fast Monte Carlo Algorithm for Evaluating Matrix Functions with Application in Complex Networks J. Sci. Comput. (IF 2.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-01 Nicolas L. Guidotti, Juan A. Acebrón, José Monteiro
We propose a novel stochastic algorithm that randomly samples entire rows and columns of the matrix as a way to approximate an arbitrary matrix function using the power series expansion. This contrasts with existing Monte Carlo methods, which only work with one entry at a time, resulting in a significantly better convergence rate than the original approach. To assess the applicability of our method

High-Order Multi-resolution Central Hermite WENO Schemes for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws J. Sci. Comput. (IF 2.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-01
Abstract In this paper, a class of high-order multi-resolution central Hermite WENO (C-HWENO) schemes for solving hyperbolic conservation laws is proposed. Formulated in a central finite volume framework on staggered meshes, the methods adopt the multi-resolution HWENO reconstructions (Li et al. in J Comput Phys 446:110653, 2021; Li et al. in Commun Comput Phys 32(2): 364-400, 2022) in space and the

Abstract Conductivity reconstruction in an inverse eddy current problem is considered in the present paper. With the electric field measurement on part of domain boundary, we formulate the reconstruction problem as a constrained optimization problem with total variation regularization. The existence and stability are proved for the solution to the optimization problem. The finite element method is

The proposed scheme is well-balanced for magnetic steady states, divergence-free for the magnetic field, conservative in the high Mach regime, and exhibits asymptotic preserving

A Penalty-Free Infeasible Approach for a Class of Nonsmooth Optimization Problems Over the Stiefel Manifold J. Sci. Comput. (IF 2.5) Pub Date : 2024-03-20
Abstract Inspired by penalty-free approaches for smooth optimization problems, we propose a sequential linearized proximal gradient method (SLPG) for a class of optimization problems with orthogonality constraints and nonsmooth regularization term. This approach alternatively takes tangential steps and normal steps to improve the optimality and feasibility respectively. In SLPG, the orthonormalization

Abstract We introduce a nonconforming virtual element method for the Poisson problem on domains with fixed curved boundary and internal interfaces. We prove arbitrary order optimal convergence in the energy and \(L^2\) norms, and assess the theoretical results with numerical experiments. The proposed scheme has the upside that it can be designed and analyzed in any dimension.

Parallel Kinetic Schemes for Conservation Laws, with Large Time Steps J. Sci. Comput. (IF 2.5) Pub Date : 2024-02-24
Abstract We propose a new parallel discontinuous Galerkin method for the approximation of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The method remains stable with large time steps, while keeping the complexity of an explicit scheme: it does not require the assembly and resolution of large linear systems for the time iterations. The approach is based on a kinetic representation of the system of conservation
