An unusual benzofuran synthesis from 2,6-disubstituted phenols and alkynyl sulfoxides is disclosed. Various highly substituted benzofurans were synthesized via the charge-accelerated [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement and subsequent substituent migration.
