Assessment of Land-Degradation Neutrality in Samara Oblast by Global and Regional Indicators

Abstract

Assessment of land-degradation neutrality (LDN) is used to characterize the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG), Target 15.3, “to combat desertification, restore degraded lands and soils” by individual countries and regions. This article presents a calculation of land-degradation neutrality for agricultural territories of Samara oblast using global indicators, such as land-productivity dynamics, land-cover dynamics, and dynamics of soil organic carbon, and regional indicators, such as yield, erosion, and content of mobile forms of potassium and phosphorus in the soil. The Trends.Earth tool, which is the QuantumGIS extension, was used to calculate the first two global indicators. Evaluation of the other indicators was carried out using file materials and data from the agrochemical service agency. According to the results, land-degradation neutrality was not achieved in the agricultural territories of the Samara oblast. The indicator of SDG 15.3.1, that is, the proportion of land that is degraded over total land area, is 78.61% with the LDN index of 57.22%. The leading process in land degradation is soil water erosion, which leads to a decrease in the levels of indicators, such as land productivity and humus content.
